The English language can be pretty difficult with spelling rules that don’t always apply, ‘silent letters’ appearing in words that are not pronounced and most words not being spelled phonetically. As such it’s easy to see that spelling and grammar can suffer if other influences such as text-speak are used more commonly in communication between young people.
Teachers fear that this form of phonetic short hand can encourage children to pick up bad habits with writing, not only shortening words but completely misspelling them. For example ‘enough’ becomes ‘enuf’ and ‘later’ becomes ‘L8er’.
Some text-speak is so influential that it has actually made it into the Oxford dictionary, abbreviations including LOL, OMG and FYI can now all be found within its pages.
So maybe this form of the English language will become acceptable in mainstream professional communication and even taught in schools, who knows the next step could be with the queen’s speech ending in LOL!
