Practising spellings with your child

Spelling is a very important part of a child’s education. Spelling is taught at school but if you can help your child with their spelling at home as well, they will pick it up a lot quicker. Spelling is not only useful when a child is learning to write but also aids their reading ability.

Children often get sent home from school with spellings from a very young. They may just have to practise them for a spelling test or they may also be given homework around them. Although it is very easy to send your child off to do their homework on their own, this may not be the best way to get them to learn them. Learning spellings is often about repetition and if you have someone to repeat them back to, this can help you remember them. Try and find fun ways you can practise spelling with your child. It doesn’t have to be sitting down and writing them out you may just ask them one at the dinner table.

Using fridge magnet letters can be a fun way to practise spellings. Ask your child to spell out a word using the magnets and check to see if it is right. The more they practise the easier it becomes for them to remember.
